In November 1994, CDNow launched its BuyWeb program. CDNow had the idea that music-oriented websites could review or list albums on their pages that their visitors might be interested in purchasing. These websites could also offer a link that would take visitors directly to CDNow to purchase the albums. The idea for remote purchasing originally arose from conversations with music label Geffen Records in the fall of 1994. This means they are more likely to spend money on luxury items, making them a perfect buying demographic for products. In the past, Matt has had some CPA offers on his posts where he's talked about the best travel credit cards. Those offers earn income similar to NerdWallet.com, that when someone clicks his link and applies for a credit card, he gets paid a referral fee. It looks like those products are gone now, and he's decided to focus strictly on book sales and keep his blog free of other display advertising (Kudos to you Matt). If I had to guess, I'm sure Matt is making at least $50k per month on his book sales seeing as much traffic as he gets.
Good article! I think there are a lot of hopeful “wannabes” who want to get everything without doing the work. You don’t have to have 10+ years of experience or be the all-knowing guru at the top of the mountain, but you do have to be willing to invest in the effort that is required to be successful. However, I have made good headway into a number of niches by going against the grain. If they say you should post a lot on your current activity, I don’t. I tell my audience why I don’t, I make sure that they understand that I am different. Sometimes, however, to establish trust and rapport with your audience, you do need to offer some kinds of proof or authority. Its very difficult to fake these and its better if you know something about what you’re doing. Once you have more experience, it becomes easier to enter a niche and position yourself as an expert. 10Beasts.com has been a successful affiliate site for the last couple years. It's been somewhat of a “hot debate” in the internet marketing industry. The website actually has very little content when compared to some other authority sites. It has under 20 pages of actual content, but it's believed that because of the strong linking profile, that Google favored the site's content. It's an extremely unusual site, as most of the link profile consists of scholarship links, which many marketers believe is an overused link building tactic that's ripe for a Google penalty.
These are essentially media companies. They have big, significant staff – staff writers, editors, directors, HR departments – and they are big ass companies. With a budget, you could grow a smaller site into a big site fast. But as you’ll see in the examples, you’ll need to have the skills to hire and manage a team. The big sites were founded by people that worked in the media industry – they’re Professionals and know exactly what they are doing.
Internet marketing itself is a special niche where your expertise with specific skills (e.g. sales copy, getting website traffic, search engine optimization, etc.) can make you money. I think that more so depends on the amount of time you have to spend. You can definitely be an influencer on multiple topics, assuming you have that kind of time to spend. I am what most would consider an influencer in SEO and affiliate marketing. For seven years, I also owned several mobile themed sites and was considered an influencer on both BlackBerry phones and prepaid phones. It’s possible, but it takes work. I also had hired writers at the time and this was before social. It takes so damn much to be an influencer these days, that if you’re doing it solo, doing it for two unrelated topics would be quite the task. :)

Ah, I see now, I was totally confusing the “competition” in Adwords with the low competition you talk about in your LongTail handbook. I actually used it as part of my screening criteria…oops. So I was looking for >1000 local searches, >$1.00 and Low Competition. I think I understand now to ignore the Competition column in the Adwords tool when searching for keywords. Thanks, guys!
